Can Climate Change affect human health?

The answer is yes, and it has already begun. It is important to know the effects of climate change on our well-being and to find mitigation methods as to how we as a people can prevent further harm.

The Respiratory system is one of the most susceptible systems to climate change as asthma attacks may increase due to air pollution, pollen and dust. Moreover, as harmful ozone concentrations increase at ground level so too will food and waterborne diseases. These are diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms that can be transmitted by water or food which in turn cause diseases such as cholera. Additionally, diseases that can be transmitted by mosquitoes, flies or ticks such as malaria are called vector borne diseases. These insects are climate sensitive and increase due to flooding and rise in temperature.

Although climate change poses serious threats to our health, its effects can be mitigated by simply reducing our energy consumption.
Here are five simple changes we can make.
  1. Burn less fossil fuels
  2. Produce less gases (try carpooling today!)
  3. Plant trees
  4. Reduce Waste
  5. Conserve Water

  1. Awareness of how climate change can lead to health deterioration is needed by the masses . This is a great post to spread that awareness

  4. Just goes to show how much of a selfish generation we have been and still is because many fail to heed the warnings and make no attempt to change. So what are we leaving for future generations????

    1. I agree to an extent here....we have been making efforts however they weren't wholesome hence the reason for little change...we definitely need to try harder.

    2. LMAO what efforts have we made in the Caribbean???

    3. Okay, let me give you an example.
Barbados uses renewable energy in the form of solar panels, thus reducing their dependency on fossil fuels. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to mitigate the effects of climate change as it greatly lowers the emissions of greenhouse gases. If other Caribbean countries adapt this form of of renewable energy, I say we will be well on our way to a brighter future.

  5. Great tips...but how does planting trees and conserving water aid in the reduction of greenhouse gases?

    1. Great question. Forests are seen as carbon sinks, therefore if each person plants one tree, it'll aid in the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as trees use this gas for photosynthesis.
Now when it comes to conserving water, each billing unit of water on residential water bills which is conserved prevents emissions of approximately 5 pounds of carbon dioxide from power plants into the atmosphere. Having said that...saving water and planting a tree are definitely somethings worth trying. :)
